German consulate papers, 1821-1886.

Papers consist of photocopies of correspondence, clippings, and other documents (mostly in German) pertaining to German-Americans in South Carolina and dealings between authorities and individuals in South Carolina and Germany. Papers were photocopied from documents in the Staatsarchiv Hamburg and are arranged by names of families or individuals including the Westendorff family and the Goddefroy family. Much correspondence is that of German consuls in Charleston (S.C.) and some pertains to inquiries about German-Americans in South Carolina on behalf of relatives or other interested persons in Germany. Included is a letter (1878) in English from Dr. P.E. Griffin of the South Carolina Lunatic Asylum in Columbia (S.C.) to C.O. Witte, "Consul of German Empire," informing Witte of the death of Ludwig Hatje and asking him to communicate the news to Hatje's family in Germany; and a letter (1886) from S.H. [Battam] in Charleston (S.C.) to Justus [Ruperti] in Hamburg (Germany) concerning prices and shipments of phosphate fertilizers and guano, with mention of the Charleston earthquake. Other items include a decree (1821) issued by John Drayton at the request of the German consul detailing the charges against John Suhr, captain of a Hamburg vessel detained at Charleston (S.C.) who is to be discharged from duty on account of insanity; a clipping of a funeral notice (1847) for Henry L. Westendorff, son of Charles P.L. Westendorff; and a "Memorandum of L. Trapmann's disbursements for acct. of the Hamburg Consulate" (1844), detailing expenditures for the case of Beinhauer v. Brandt, including the cost of an advertisement in the Charleston Courier soliciting information about one Jacob Meyer, formerly Jacob Hasselbalk Ingwersen.
